Week1
Working in the DQ Design company has been a very interesting and exciting experience so far. For the first week of working here, we were given the task to create different logo ideas for a poster. Carrying out this task gave me the opportunity to show the workers my creative designing skills. The people at this place are very friendly and kind which makes it fun working here. We are also able to wear our own clothes rather than suiting up everyday to come here. I think this is a great way to work, were able to relax and not put stress on our selves.

Recording products

Phonograph- In the 1870s until the late 1880s the Phonograph was the most common technology used to record sounds. For about one hundred years the phonograph was the most common method for consumers to enjoy recorded music at home. It is a well developed technology that can give you quick and good pleasure of soothing music. To use this equipment a grooved disc is placed on a turntable which will be rotating at a constant rate.

Phonograph: Thomas Edison Edition- The first ever phonograph to be created was in 1877. Before there were CD players, tape records, cassettes, music system etc. there was this first ever phonograph, and Thomas Edison is to be thanked for the music we have today. While he was trying to improve the telegraph transmitter, he realized that the movements through the paper tape produce a noise. When he spoke into it he found out that at a high speed, his spoken words came out.

The gramophone- Emile Berliner the German immigrant was the first to create the gramophone, that could play disc records instead of cylinders. The discs have a larger advantage than cylinders. Disc are tend to be more easier to use and it produces better quality sounds than a cylinder. The first ever gramophone was in fact highly cheap but was always consider as a serious product. It was not a perfectly created product because it had no motor, and having no motor makes it tedious and difficult for the operator to fluently play the turntable at a steady speed.

Shellac record player- This recorder was one of the better ones because it lasted a long while rather than the other recorders. It lasted a longer while because it was made of a stronger metal.

Modern record player- the modern record payers are our everyday mechanical devices that generate sound by playing a grooved disc, instead of a cylinder like what they did with the phonograph. These amazing radio technology first came around in the 20th century/ 1900s. They became so popular that the chucked the phonograph down into the sales where it became Un- popular. People still use record players but they were also knocked down into the sales by CD players which are now the top music technology.

Open reel tape recorder- The recording medium is held on a reel rather than it being placed in a cassette. This open reel tape recorder was used in the most earliest tape recorders like THe pioneering Magnetophons of the 1930s. This was German.

Multi - Track Recorder- With a multi- track recorder more than one sound at the same time or play them at the same time. It is a double act when it comes to recording with it. The analogue tape based equipment will allow you to achieve multi tracking.

Audio Cassette- Invented in 1962 by the phillips company, the audio cassette is a tape that plays music and sounds. The quality was not so great, only until the 1970s came.

Digital Audio Tape- the digital audio tape was created in 1987. It has a long longer playing time than the audio tapes that were created before it. This can hold up to 2 hours of recording audio on each side of it.

CD- CD holds digital sounds on it. It is small and thin but different types of music and data can be held on it, depending on the size the Cd rom holds.. 1.2 mm thick and weights 15-20 grams thats the original size of a CD player.

Mp3- Just like a Cd the mp3 can hold any type of music on it depending on the memory size. It is one of the most modern music technology at the moment. It was created in the 1990s but became very successful in 1997. You are able to bring a mp3 player with you anywhere because of its average pocket size.

History of radio plays

The history of radio plays is well placed in history. The early history of radio plays is the history of technologies that produced radio instruments that used radio waves. Through out the timeline of radio plays many different people in the world contributed their theory and inventions which became our everyday radio.

In 1884 a primitive device was invented to respond to radio waves by Temistocle Calzecchi-Onesti. This device consisted of a tube filled with iron fillings, called a 'cohere'. It is said that the device was a critical discovery because being able to develop will make it able to be the first practical detector.

Nathan Stubblefield was said to have developed radio between 1885 and 1892, before either Marconi or Tesla, but his devices seemed to have worked by induction transmission rather than radio transmission.

In 1885 Thomas Edison created the first ever working phonograph. This phonograph was the first technology able to record and produce sound. It was then that Thomas Edison became highly popular which made hs work rise through many years.

There are many claims of who invented radio, which in the begining was called 'wireless telegraph'. So many people are claiming to have invented radio but my conclusion is that a majority of people contributed to making our everyday music possible.

Task 2:

The main skills for song writing is to practice. Not all songs rhyme but rhyming is one of the best ways to make a song, You need to make sure you have a good Rhythm to every every beat, a good flow and make sure it is making sense. Poem is kind of the same as song writing. You need to make sure it sounds good and catchy for people to want to listen to it. Know who your target audience are and make sure it as the appropriate type of language in it.

Producer- You need organization skills for becoming a producer. You cannot be un-organized and expect to be a good producer, you have to make sure you have everything on point. Negotiating is another key skill you need for becoming a producer. If you don't have good negotiating skills then there is no point because you would have to make deals for your film crew or music crew, equipments and the sets. Energy, determination and the right mentality could make it all successful for you, if you don't have any energy and your just lazy then you can find yourself dreaming about producing. Determination is the key thing for almost anything there is so making sure you are would get you anywhere.

Task 3- People do not really know how to apply for a job in the music industry, there is not an official answer, its something that happens just like that. One of the main ways people do get into the industry is by doing their own thing, like TV shows, videos etc. Eventually in time you will find yourself in the business depending on your great progress.

Task 4

Song writing:

1. Dedicate some time each day to composing songs. Make sure that you are practicing daily.

2. Listen constantly to popular songs and work out what is it that is making these songs successful. Make sure your studying their techniques and strength.

3. Before you even start on any song, you must always decide on who your target audience will be, and the type of of compositions they will relate to. Whatever music genre you choose make sure the melody and lyrics are able to be understood by them.

4. Make sure your enjoying your songwriting work, don't let it get the better of you. I f your not enjoying then there is no point of continuing.

Task 5- The median pay scale for a producer with a 1-4 year period is £30,000 - £40,000. A 5-9 year old period is from £40,000 - £70,000. A 10- 19 year period is £50,000 - £90,000. The pay scale for song writing is 1-10 year period 30,000 - 70,000

Task 6- One of the training methods needed for getting in the song writing business is to attend universities like, The Royal Academy Of Music, where you will be given lots of opportunities. The orchestra training in the Royal Academy of music prepares the students for a diverse and demanding professional life. The first year undergraduates take part in the string orchestra rehearsals weekly forming quartets for chamber music training. You can also join a music group with good consistant progress taking place, then wait till your time to shine.

You do not need any form of degree to be a producer. A producer is like a conductor of an orchestra; he understands each individual part, and also has an understanding of how that single part relates to the whole composition. You need a good working knowledge of music. Make sure you have a good grasp on the basic principle of rhythm.

Task 7- you can find out where work opportunities exist by watching the TV where certain adverts will tell you many information about the place of work opportunities. These come on rarely so you will have to be lucky to catch it. The SC magazine is a magazine that contains information on where work opportunities also exist. You can use the internet to find out this information but you would have to look carefully because it is highly difficult to find out this information.

Blues music: Blues music is usually sad and was originated from the new orleans and was played by men

Melodrama: Charles easdon began melodrama in the 18th century

Classical ballet: Classic ballet was created in the 17th and 16th century

Ragtime music: This type of music was created in 1897- 1918

Sattriya dance: This is an Indian type of dance created in the 15th century and it was Sankardeva who created the style of dance.

Lindy hop: Lindy hop originated in the late 1920's. It is evolved from Africa, and also involved in New York.

Restoration comedy: This was created in the 1660s to 1710

Punk rock: Punk rock originated between 1974 and 1976 in the United States of America

Brit pop: It originated in the United Kingdom in the 1990's.

VOICE OVER- (Vacation Limitation) 2 seconds.

Unit 2 performance EVALUATION ON THE RADIO PLAY 16/12/09

Through out our radio play there were certain sound effects and music played at certain moments in the play. Every moment that the pilot is about to speak a 'ding dong' noise is played using a xylophone. This makes it more realistic, showing he is speaking through a Tanoy. We used a soft and sad sound clip also near the end of the radio play, this was to make you feel the emotion and fear of the people on the plane, it was basically to make you feel sorry for them. All these were live sound effects including the continuos noises of footsteps to show there are a lot of people around. The main success was the fact that we managed to go through the whole script without having to laugh, because usually we kept being immature and laughing at the voices we were making in this radio play. The other success was that we managed to to each take the role of more than one character. I am actually very proud that i have accomplish something fair enough with my group. One of the only problems i think there was, was the fact that we needed to rehearse more to allow us to flow better through the radio play better.

My main character in the radio play is a detective called detective smith. He was born in the Kansas, America. This is a male detective that is quite tall, dark brown, brown eyes, a bit toned, very healthy and highly intelligent. He was educated at the university of Kansas where he studied law. Further in his life he went to train to become a private detective, where he trained at the detective industry. After being succesful through this he was given the official status as a crime detective, being able to have good communication, good computer skills and self confidence when placed forward in court. He is more like a mysterious man who does what is needed to be done. He is awfully quiet and deep down holds a dark secret inside.

• My role in the performance was to act as a detective and a few unknown people.

• My main responsibility was to make sure that i am able to change my voice as quick as possible when switching from characters to characters. I also needed to make sure i have a good flow with my characters so the whole performance don't seem too fake and un- organize. The other responsibility i had to make sure i keep together was the sound effects, i have to have the right timing and play the right tone.
• The tasks for the final preparation will be to get the xylophone to use for the tanoy the pilot speaks through.

• We will be using the xylophone, Our scripts, the mic, the stands and that is the main things we will be using.

For the second unit Scene, we have been looking at leaflets and researching up on them. We were first given the task to go home and look for any kind of leaflet that advertises events happening. When we attended the next graphics lesson we had to show the different types of leaflets we had and discuss what it is about, how it is designed and why it is designed.

Our main task was to design our own leaflets for creative & media for 16-19 year olds. My idea for a leaflet was to advertise different types of events happening in London's South Bank and where people can go when they are there. I decided to advertise my dance group called 'Fresh Az Ice' which would be my main attraction for my leaflet. The dance will be taking place at the National Theatre. I did approximately 3 different ideas of how it would look, but at the end I finally selected my final idea.

Even though I had to include 3-4 other events for the leaflet I still thought it would be more creative to focus on an creative activity of my own. At first I thought it was too long to be doing all of this and that it was boring but i thought to myself that I needed to complete everything in order to earn my diploma. I did the following designed events of the Movieum, The London Eye and The Aquarium. The other 2 remaining designs were of a map on how to get there and where the events are and a front cover. These took me quite a long while to complete because of the lack of determination. If I never thought about what I can earn if I completed this then i think I would have probably left this till late. For each one of these designs I made more than one draft and came out with final ideas. Finding out what I could include on a leaflet helped me more thanks to the internet. If I never used it I would have seriously been struggling. The main things I surely needed to include were the price, time, place, date, and use language and fonts that young people will relate to. Those were the key thing i needed to include. I personally think I did very well with my design for my leaflet, I am well happy with it and there is a lot of people I would truly recommend it to.

Paul the journalist

Paul is a journalist that works for the Observer newspaper company. He is a sub-editor in his job, he writes reviews and copy articles. Paul is the type of journalist that also interviews celebrities, especially at the back stages. It as been around 20 years that Paul as been a journalist for. Written work is called copy when in the journalist industry, unlike us modern day people would call it text. Being a sub- editor is a big job because he has to narrow down whatever writing as possible so it is interesting and have a good flow. He went to the London college of printing where he first started studying journalism. Being a journalist is not an easy job, its like non stop work and if your not working the you will not get paid. He also use to work for a music paper called sounds.

The reason for him choosing this kind of job is because he is very interested in the art, and the way journalism is changing rapidly, its hard to get in the industry these days. It is a problem when your missing your deadline rapidly, because you will get fired, so you have to make sure you keep up.

Kid: Mum are we nearly there?

Unknown: excuse me can we go to the toilets now?

Air hostess: yes its fine. You can come out of your seats now. Please come right this way.

Pilot: Your drinks will be coming round shortly.

Air hostess: Hi, what would you like to drink Sam?

Kid: coke.

Unknown: Ok can i have one coke and a small glass of wine please.

Air hostess: There you go. Hi, what would u like to drink?

Pilot: ok, can everyone take there se..a.a.. t.s.

Air hostess: everyone sit down, put your belts on. (airhostess goes to check on the pilot.)

Air hostess: oh my God, James are you okay? James? Can Tom come to check and he was just on the floor.

Tom: well what are we going to do we cant leave him ? how did this happen?

Air hostess: I dont know, I come to check and he was just on the floor.

Tom: well what are we going to do we cant just leave him here.

Detective Smith: Can I help? I saw that something was wrong. Im a detective.

Tom: Yeah, hes had a heart attack but we need to move him because this auto pilot might not last. We need to be safe and keep calm.

Detective: well i know alot about planes and i used to fly them all the time so ill stay here and watch it to make sure nothing goes wrong.

Air hostess: okay well im going to check on everyone, make sure there fine and not surspicious of anything.

Narrator: The aircraft is still holding on, the auto pilot is still working and people are getting told to keep calm, but imagen what is going through their heads "is the plane going to land or are we going to die".

Unknown: can you tell me what's going on, its not fair that your not telling us. We could die.

Air hostess: can you calm down please, your not going to die your perfectly safe you just need to keep calm.

Detective smith: can Rosie and Tom please come to the front of the plane please. Right we need to land this plane soon, we cant go any further its to dangerous.

Air hostess + Tom: okay

Air hostess: can everyone please take their seats and belt up.

Detective Smith: we are now going to land for everyones safety.

Narrator: the plane has now landed and everyone is glad to be safe and stopped panacking. The paramedics came running over and carried the pilot out of the plane. You can see the smiles on peoples faces because they have finally landed.

Detective Smith: That was lucky.

Air hostess + Tom: well done we couldnt have done it without you.

Narrator: Now everyone is off the plane, ringing there family happy to be off. Everyone has left, all you can see is the ambulances and hear sirens.

DIARY 16/12/09

Today in our music lesson, we went to the studio and started practicing our radio play. It was a hard and long day but i think we were able to pull through and produce a good enough piece of work

Kids: mum are we nearly there?

Unknown: can we go to the toilets now?

Air hostess: yes! its fine you can come out your seats now, please right this way.

Unit 2 Performance 19/11/09 radio play

Today we all made the decision that the pilot will end up having a heart attack instead of somebody murdering him. It was a fuss at first on deciding what the main thing that happened is going to be. We all had many ideas like 'The co-pilot murdering the main pilot' 'Lightning struck the plane at the front, giving the pilots a real shock' and then our last and final idea was to ' let the pilot have an heart attack, without a co- pilot being there.

A radio play is a form of audio storytelling on the radio. Sound effects help the reader to picture and imagine what is going on in the story. Radio plays now are old fashioned but people still listen to them on the radio or you can have records. A radio play is so different to the music radio. The radio play is much harder, and the reader must focus and make it interesting so people don't get bored very easily.

There are different types of radio plays such as thrillers, comedy, soap operas and mysteries.

Unit 2 performance-Radio play idea

It starts off when everyone is on the plane going to America but then half way through, the lights start to off and everything strange happens. Everyone starts to get worried and wonders what is going on but no one knows what to do. People start to realise the plane is getting lower but when the air hostess goes to see the captain to see what is happening she See's that the pilot is dead so someone must of done it on the plane but would still be on the plane, so they try to find out who it is. In the end someone on the plane tries to fly the plane and they survive. In the background there are noises of people talking fast and sounding worried. At the start before all of that happens the air hostess are going to be talking and then when the end happens you can see the change in them. Even though everyone survived they didn't find the person who killed the pilot and at the end. There will be kids screaming but its a film that they will be watching and there will be noises of people talking about america.

The characters will be the air hostess, kids, one main person and background noises.

My character will be a young detective who was trying to go on holiday but it had to be postpone because of the whole incidence on the plane. I will be one of the first people the staff members of the plane reportS to about the whole problem, considering he is the law. My reaction to the whole incidence will be very shocking, to think there is a killer on the plane and im a detective, so their all going to depend on me to find out who it is and how were going to land the plane.
